Their claim has this rider: “Ranking According to Webometrics.
To prove the genuineness of their ranking, UI hyperlinked Image on the slide. Once you click on the image, it takes you to the official site of Webometrics – http://webometrics.info/en
To satisfy our curiosity, we clicked on the link. At Webometrics, what we found was way dissimilar.
Obafemi Awolowo University is ranked Number 1. University of Lagos, 2; and University of Ilorin is at number 3.
University of Ibadan I is at a distant 64.
University of Ibadan I is at a distant 64.
We can’t immediately verify why UI would make such claims yet link the claim to an infographic that suggest otherwise. But we understand from Webometrics that “After publication on the July 31st we received evidence of bad practices by a few universities, so a corrected edition was needed.”
Webometrics says it is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions since 2004. Every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise is performed by the Cybermetrics Lab in Spain to provide reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their web presence and impact.
