The early days of WhatsApp were far more turbulent and starting with just a handful of users and an app that constantly crashed, the team almost gave up on the idea.
Having pledged to carry on developing the app, however, the bugs were eventually ironed out and WhatsApp continued onto a huge growth in fan base.
So if you're one of the millions of users here's nine things you didn't know about the famous app.
- WhatsApp was created in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum. Having left Yahoo! they applied for positions at Facebook but were turned down.
- Incredibly, in 2014 Facebook went on to purchase WhatsApp for a staggering sum of $19billion.
- The company has just 55 staff including 32 engineers who are responsible for 22million users each.
- Since its launch WhatsApp hasn't spent a penny on marketing and has no PR team. Its success is all down to its users spreading the word.
- In one day WhatsApp processes 4 times as many messages as there are humans on planet Earth.
- Jan Koum, keeps a note from co-founder Brian Acton taped to his desk that reads “No Ads! No Games! No Gimmicks!" This helps to keep them focused on building a pure messaging experience.
- The blue tick outcry! Users complained after WhatsApp added the double blue tick, which shows if your message have been read. Android users can switch this off but Apple fans are stuck with it.
- WhatsApp is now available on your computer. The web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device
- Rumours are rife that WhatsApp will soon add voice calls to its service. Some users have already reported seeing the feature but there's no word from the messaging service as to when it will appear.
