The use of aphrodisiac drugs is becoming more popular among men who have resorted to its use with the optimism that they would pep up their sex lives or produce pleasurable feelings and sensations that could lead to sexual arousal and satisfaction for their partners. In this piece, TUNDE OGUNTOLA examines the hidden dangers of aphrodisiac drugs you need to know;
Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. Logically enough, she’s the name-goddess of aphrodisiacs, substances that supposedly promote sexual desire and arousal, enhance sex drive and sexual performance, and extend sexual energy.
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia defines aphrodisiac as a substance that, when consumed, increases sexual desire.
But medical professionals warn that rather than enhancing sexual prowess, regular users could be putting their long-term health at risk.
Hundreds of hawkers ply the bustling streets and commuter buses in most Nigerian towns and relaxation centres selling their aphrodisiacs drugs, despite their unknown and untested effects on the male sex drive.
Unknown to many, some of these drugs have chemical substances which can cause liver or kidney problems, creating health problems for themselves which are very expensive and difficult to manage.
Most these drugs find their way to the market illegally and have not been tested or approved by Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and sometimes accreditation can be faked by unscrupulous distributors.
A civil servant who identify himself as Abdullahi Shehu said that he is unperturbed about the potential risks, and he is convinced that they aid his performances in bed as his wife always commend him afterwards.
He said, ‘’I use aphrodisiac drugs each time i want to have sex with my wife and since I discovered the impact, my wife and i are happy about it.’’
Kenneth Omale, in his experience said that the use of sexual boosters saved his marriage. According to him, “I was suffering for many years until a friend introduced me to the vendors at the popular Nyanya market, Abuja, and ever since I started using it, there has been tremendous improvement in my sexual performance and my wife is also very happy and encourages me to continue using it.’’
A taxi driver who identify himself as Suleiman Balogun said, ‘’I started using aphrodisiac drugs lately and i have since adviced my colleagues to give it a try as it boosts my performance so much that my wife cooks my favourite meal afterwards.’’
A banker who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, ‘my wife and I always had issues in our marriage, but the tide has rapidly changed since I started using aphrodisiacs drugs, I have saved my marriage that was on the verge of collapse. I am now more concerned about my wife’s satisfaction and living happily.’’
A pharmacist, Nnamdi Ugochukwu said apparently aphrodisiac drugs intensify and prolong sensations of orgasm, probably by increasing blood flow to the genitals and distorting time perception, but in turn lead to a drop in blood pressure that could become dangerous.
He warned that, the possible side effects of such drugs could include anaemia, dizziness, severe headaches, unconsciousness, increased risk of cancer, stroke, cirrhosis and reduced fertility, as well as enlargement of the prostate gland.
He added that, instead of this intended outcome, ‘’decreased or no sexual response and functioning could occur, often when taking moderate or larger amounts, or from long-term usage. Dependency and other more serious harms can also result. In addition, people’s judgment is often impaired, leaving them more vulnerable to sexual assault, as the recipient or perpetrator.’’
One University of Lagos clinical pharmacist said that instead of enhancing libido, regular drinkers of liquid aphrodisiacs may be risking their future fertility and even life.
Earlier this year, the Director General of the NAFDAC Dr. Paul Orhii revealed that the agency has seized N270m worth of fake sex stimulant drugs.
Dr Orhii said that his men discovered five containers of the fake Heragra and Ziagra at the terminals in Apapa.
Orhii also used the avenue to address the public, warning them of the side effects of the fake sex stimulants.
“The aphrodisiacs were labelled as anti-malarial drugs; still they were intercepted at the terminals. These products are known drugs of misuse and abuse, which can result in very serious health problems such as increased blood pressure, stroke, ulceration of the gastro-intestinal tract, tolerance and dependence,” Dr Paul Orhii told newsmen.
“May I also state that regular use of these drugs over time can cause stroke, liver diseases, kidney disease, swelling of the face and tongue and skin disease,” he further added.
According to a review by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), no purported aphrodisiac has been scientifically proven to be effective. Indeed, as in the case of Spanish Fly, some can be harmful and even potentially dangerous.
As medical professional therefore cannot vouch for their efficacy of these drugs. There is a great concern about the distribution of these illicit drugs.
However, regardless of their actual action, the power of suggestion, psychologically and emotionally, is key to aphrodisiacs. If you believe using any particular substance will enhance your sex life, then it can help bring about sexual desire and arousal, at least in the short term.
Of course, a good night’s sleep, time, privacy, confidence in your contraception, self-confidence, and a turned-on partner may do the same thing.
